Flash Fiction

It seemed as if everyone in the city had lined the streets to see him. Everyone was eager to meet their great leader. Well, almost everyone. A girl, 15 or so, stands alone around a street corner. Her face dirty and bruised. A long beige robe covers most of her body. She watches as more and more people pile into the street and she hates everyone of them for coming.

She remembers a time that she will never forget for the rest of her life. The day he came into power. She recalls overhearing her mother and father talking. "He is no good" he said, "we will all live to regret this decision." He couldn't have been more write. The very next day a knock at the door. Three men dressed in army uniform. Her father answered the door and before he had a chance to say anything they shot him. The girl ran and hid under her bed. She heard more shots fired followed by a scream. It came from her mother, instantly she knew they had shot her little brother. Three more shots, and then nothing. A few minutes later she heard the door close but she didn't move. She lied under the bed for many hours crying. She knew why her family had been murdered. All because they believed in different things than their new leader. She knew that many more of her kind would be killed for the exact same reason.

She jolted back to reality as she heard cheers off in the distance. He was coming. The man that is responsible for the death of her family as well as thousands of others of her religion. She made her way to the back of the crowd gathered along the street. She heard the low hum of the approaching jeep he was sure to be on. She slowly made her way to the front of the line. As the car approached, she walked into the middle of the street. She removed her hand from the robe that was holding the gun. She raised it and without and hesitation pulled the trigger. The bullet hit him right between the eyes.

Personal Reflection

I fell that this flash fiction piece shows both power from within and power from without very well. The aspect of power from without is represented my the man in power. This man has abused his power by killing everyone that does not have the same beliefs that he does. He has killed the entire girls family as well as anyone else with the same religion. The aspect of power from within is represented by the girl killing the man. Her family, as well as many other people like them have been mistreated and been served a great deal of injustice. The girl has the power within herself to make things as right as they can be and she acts of this by killing her leader.
