The book Martyn Pig by Kevin Brooks has an abuse of power. The main character, Martyn, is an only child living with his father. His mother left when he was young and his only other family member is his aunt which Martyn absolutely hates. His dad realizes this and knows that he can take advantage of Martyn because he will never tell anyone because if he does he will be forced to live with his aunt. As a result of this he starts forcing Martyn to do all the house work and abusing him if he doesn't.
" "That bloody woman" was my Aunty Jean. Dad's older sister.A terrible women. Think of the worst person you know, the double it, and you'll be halfway to Aunty Jean. I can hardly bear to describe her, to tell you the truth.Furious is the first word that comes to mind. Mad, ugly and furious." (Brooks 4)
"I remember once, though, we were sitting at the table eating dinner and Dad had a cigarette smoking in the ashtray. This smoke was getting all over the place, stinking up the food, getting in my eyes, making me cough. I kept on asking him to move it, but he just sat there reading his paper, ignoring me, so finally I reached across to move it myself-and his fist came down like a hammer. Whack. Broke my wrist. I couldn't believe it. I'd never seen him move so fast in his life." (Brooks 20)
This is an example of exactly what the quote by Jimi Hendrix was trying to say. When power falls into the wrong hands it can be devastating. In this situation power falls into the wrong hands when Martyn's father gets power over Martyn. His father, a drunk and disturbed man should have never been allowed to have any power over anyone, especially a minor. This is a similar situation to that when Captain Torres has power and abuses it in Just Lather, That's All by Hernando Tellez. Both situations ended poorly as a result of power falling into the wrong hands...
